Neighborhood names around the city that make you curious about their history?

Stolen from r/asknyc

Curious about some of the city’s oddly named neighborhoods and where those names actually come from. What are some other neighborhoods with names that seem strange or make you question how they ended up being called that?

Thank you for the great eats!

My wife and I flew up from Boston for the first time for a few days. Between researching this sub, /r/askTO, and chatting with randos, we ate like kings.

As a fat guy, I figured I’d share some of the notable food and drink spots from the trip:

Bar Isabel was outstanding, better than any restaurant I had in Spain. Tasting menu is well worth it.

Ted’s Collision. Proper dive, a sludge metal band was on, good fun.

The Shameful Tiki was awesome. Awesome vibes, 10/10.

We did a Kensington Market walking food/history tour that had coffee, momos, beef patties, takoyaki, churros, Gus Tacos, a few other things. Tour itself was pricey, but the educational aspect of it was absolutely fascinating and the guide was great.

Spirit of York was decent, but the Distillery District itself was really beautiful to walk around. Mill Street Brewing was solid.

Richmond Station was probably the best overall dining experience. Surprised it's not in the Michelin guide.

Tinuno was great value. Thanks to whoever recommended this.

Prequel & Apothecary was a top tier speakeasy. I find it kinda funny that speakeasies are a thing here since you never had Prohibition, but I'm glad the trend exists.

Soos was some of the better Malaysian food I’ve had. That roti...

Gift Shop was an easy recommend.

Blood Brothers Brewing was my favorite brewery of the trip.

Georgian House had slow service, but the food was legit & authentic. I’d go back for the khinkali.

Patois had maybe the best front of house and bar staff. Tasty dishes. I would've never thought to mix Jamaican and Chinese but here we are.

Bar Raval had the best cocktails of the trip, great staff, and a beautiful space. Was easy to grab a seat at the bar on a Sunday night too.

I'm very jealous there's a shawarma spot on every street corner. I also did an Otto's Doner, cause that Berlin-style stuff doesn't exist at home.

One minor thing I noticed is the disproportionate use of real candles. At home, I feel like I only see candles in high end restaurants, not dive bars or breweries. Definitely made everything that much cozier.

Thanks for the hospitality and great times. Looking forward to coming back again. Much love!
