Guinness in a can vs on tap - a common disparity?

I’m Norwegian and I’m very fond of Guinness, however over here, in my opinion at least, the Guinness you buy in a can at the store tastes of utter disappointment compared to the Guinness you get on tap in bars. It tastes watered down, weak. I’m curious if that’s the case in other countries, though admittedly most curious about Ireland. I just happened to be over there a few months ago but during that weekend I didn’t think to check and I’m furious with myself.

Also, one time at a bar as the bartender was pouring me a Guinness, he started telling me how Guinness isn’t actually a real stout. I can’t remember his reasonings, but he came off rather pretentious so I’d like to believe it’s just petty snobbery, but is it true?
