Noise is no longer a secondary concern for BESS and data centers – it’s becoming a primary design driver.

Last week, Power Electronics joined the Responsible Battery Energy Storage Development Summit in Sydney, where David O’Donoghue spoke about the growing noise challenge in large‑scale energy infrastructure. From BESS to data centers, the message was clear: effective noise management is now essential for regulatory compliance, operational performance, and community acceptance.

As more projects are built near residential areas or mixed‑use zones, the old approach – adding a generic louver and hoping for the best – no longer works. Acoustic impact is real, and it’s being written into environmental approvals from Europe to Australia.

At Huaxia New Energy, we’ve been working on this exact problem. Our acoustic louvers are purpose‑built for BESS containers and power electronics cabinets.

The standard industrial louver was never designed for energy storage. It was made for buildings, for HVAC, for places where a little water ingress doesn’t kill electronics. But inside a BESS or a fast charger, humidity corrodes contactors, dust clogs cooling fans, and wind‑driven rain finds its way to control boards. Then the system derates, trips, or fails – often during peak demand when you need it most.

🔹 IP66 + C5 weatherproof louvers– Dust‑tight, pressure‑wash resistant, pressure drop <30 Pa.– Cooling fans don’t fight the louver, and harsh outdoor environments (coastal, desert, industrial) won’t shorten asset life.

🔹 Acoustic louvers– Tuned for the 1000–8000 Hz frequency range where fan noise dominates.– Essential when BESS or data centers sit near residential or mixed‑use zones – meet environmental noise limits without compromising airflow.

🔹 Explosion pressure relief louvers / rupture panels– Pre‑set burst pressure vents flammable gases instantly during thermal runaway.– A silent, always‑ready safety net that helps prevent catastrophic container failure.

Why our louver is different from the “generic” ones you can buy online.

  1. True IP66, not just “weather resistant” – We test against dust ingress (complete protection) and powerful water jets (12.5 mm nozzle, 100 liters/min at 100 kPa). No compromises.
  2. Low pressure drop – designed for fans – Many acoustic or protective louvers are so restrictive that the cooling fan has to spin much faster, increasing noise and reducing fan life. Our blades are shaped to maintain high free area while deflecting water.
  3. C5 corrosion protection – Standard powder coating isn’t enough. We use a multi‑layer process (zinc primer + polyester top coat) that passes 1,000+ hours of salt spray testing.
  4. Modular, scalable – We offer standard sizes from 200 x 200 mm up to custom container‑sized panels. Same performance, same reliability.

If you’re planning a BESS or data center project and noise compliance is on your checklist, feel free to connect with me and we will go through with details together!

It doesn’t look like much yet – but this is where a 50 MW / 5‑hour BESS starts to take shape.

Location:Mid North, South Australia.

Hallett Battery Energy Storage System – first stage: 50 MW, five hours of storage.

Built alongside the existing Hallett gas‑fired power station.

Congratulations to Enerven and EnergyAustralia for kicking off another significant project. Bringing national capability back to South Australia’s own backyard – that’s something worth celebrating!

At Huaxia New Energy, we know that a successful BESS isn’t just about megawatts and duration numbers. It’s about the physical protection layer that keeps those megawatts available year after year – especially in South Australia’s demanding climate (summer heat, dust, and the occasional storm).

Three components we supply that help assets like Hallett stay reliable:

✅ IP66 + C5 weatherproof louvers – dust‑tight, pressure‑wash resistant, pressure drop <30 Pa. Cooling fans don’t fight the louver, even during heatwaves.

✅ Acoustic louvers – tuned for 1000–8000 Hz fan noise. Critical when BESS sites are located near rural homes or future mixed‑use zones.

✅ Explosion pressure relief louvers / rupture panels – pre‑set burst pressure vents flammable gases instantly. A silent safety net that works whether anyone’s watching or not.

We’re not the builders. We’re the ones who make sure the builders’ work lasts.

#QuestionForGroup:

When you look at a greenfield BESS site like Hallett, what’s the one passive protection feature you wish was specified more rigorously from day one – ingress, noise, or pressure relief?
