Feature request: Open apps directly on a specific virtual desktop
Hi everyone,
I’ve been using virtual desktops on Windows 11 daily, and overall it’s a great feature for organizing workflows. However, there’s one limitation that really breaks the experience for power users.
Currently, there’s no native way to open an application directly on a specific virtual desktop.
For example, I’d love to:
- Always open Windows Terminal on Desktop 2
- Keep work apps on Desktop 1 and dev tools on Desktop 2 automatically
- Assign apps to desktops persistently (not just “move after opening”)
Right now, the only options are:
- Manually moving apps after launch
- Using workarounds like scripts or third-party tools
It would be a huge improvement if Windows allowed:
- Assigning apps to a specific virtual desktop
- Launching apps directly into a chosen desktop
- Possibly via shortcut, context menu, or app settings
Is this something Microsoft is already considering?
If not, I think this would significantly improve productivity for anyone using multiple desktops seriously.
Curious to hear how others are handling this today.
Thanks!
