Beware Basecamp at West 8th’s Overlords
Think twice before signing a lease at Basecamp. That’s something I never would have said until soon after MIG Real Estate signed the quit claim deed. To the community’s newest overlords, MIG (property owner) and Avenue5 (management company), you’re disposable come renewal time if you try to negotiate a fair market rate adjustment.
Handing over ~$180,000 to any business over the course of five years used to mean you’d built a relationship that mattered to that business, believe it or not. Gen X woman waving at air. Anyway…
While the revolving door system created by private equity and behemoth corporations is the new normal, it shouldn’t be, and we need to talk about it instead of get used to packing up and chasing a move-in “deal” at the end of every lease cycle.
I put up a reasonable, respectful fight, and while C-suite figures did respond to me, our collective position as renters wasn’t acknowledged, and it hit hard how much bigger than me this is. It seems I have a new cause, and I welcome any reach-outs to connect over this in a productive way.
If you’ve been affected by the practices of the aforementioned companies, Greystar, or others, I encourage you to share your experiences and concerns with Rep. Pettersen and Attorney General Phil Weiser. Change will be slow, but these two are at least gathering information and listening, unlike Polis who’s cheering on algorithmic price fixing and tweeting about Taylor Swift.

*Edited to correct my erroneous angry ballpark estimate math. I’m sorry for being misleading about the rent price!
