5 main types of afflictions in vedic astrology.
Afflicted in Jyotish means a planet’s natural functioning is disturbed, stressed, distorted, blocked, or pressured by other chart factors.
A strong planet can still be afflicted. Strength ≠ purity.
Example: Sun in Leo = strong. But if Rahu, Saturn, Mars, Ketu, etc. heavily influence it, the Sun may become unstable or distorted in expression.
Main ways a planet gets afflicted:
- Close conjunction with malefics
- Rahu = obsession, distortion
- Saturn = pressure, fear, suppression
- Mars = aggression, conflict
- Ketu = detachment, fragmentation
Closer degrees = stronger affliction.
Approx rule: 0–3° = extremely strong 3–6° = strong 6–10° = moderate 10°+ = mild
Example: Sun 10°, Rahu 11° = intense affliction. Sun 10°, Rahu 28° = much weaker.
- Harsh aspects Malefics aspecting a planet create pressure.
Examples: Saturn → insecurity, delay, authority struggles Mars → anger, ego clashes Rahu → obsession, instability Ketu → confusion, detachment
Weak placement Affliction becomes worse if the planet is already weak. Example: Sun in Libra + Saturn aspect is harder than Sun in Leo + Saturn aspect.
Difficult houses 6th, 8th, and 12th houses intensify struggle, psychological pressure, loss, or instability.
Multiple afflictions This is what astrologers mean by “heavily afflicted.”
Example: Sun conjunct Rahu
- Saturn aspect
- 8th house
- weak Moon
Now the Sun is under pressure from several directions.
Benefics can reduce affliction: Especially Jupiter.
Example: Sun–Rahu in Leo without Jupiter: ego instability, obsession, validation hunger.
Sun–Rahu in Leo with Jupiter: charisma, vision, controlled ambition.
Affliction does NOT automatically mean failure or bad character.
Afflicted planets often create:
- ambition
- intensity
- resilience
- psychological depth
- massive worldly impact
Many famous people have afflicted charts because friction creates drive.
A clean planet = stable expression. A strong but afflicted planet = powerful but internally conflicted expression.
