rant incoming
you trainers at these megas are a huge let down, moreso than 10-20 years ago. I do the process and procedures training which is company specific paperwork and tech training. nothing hard, it's intuitive for some people and a struggle for others but no big deal.
I also have to do a full day check ride with new drivers.
I've had two drivers in the last 2 weeks that had 6 months to 1 year of experience and both had the same story. they went to a mega carrier for training, were put in a truck with a lease operator as a team driver, the lease operator did not train them at all and they couldn't pass the mega's test so their training kept getting extended until they quit. Both of them, from different megas, told me these lease operators just wanted them to drive and wouldn't let them practice backing up at all. One of them said his trainer didn't let him back up anytime anywhere, not even at a customer, his trainer would get up at every customer and back up himself so they could "get the next load faster."
the guy with only six months had a disability which is why he got a CDL, he couldn't keep doing his old job, so the asshole he was with thought he was too slow and didn't show him anything that requires getting out of the truck, he has no idea how to slide tandems, he never once hooked or unhooked from a trailer himself.
these guys are making less than $500/ week otr team and not getting the experience they trade the shitty pay for.
it's the same story at our other terminal. the new hires can drive forward but literally can't do anything else.
we've had to come up with an 8 week training plan for these guys but it's going to limit what they can make even more after such a shitty run at these other places.
