What's YOUR bike theft prevention strategy?

I tried looking for an older version of this post and could not find it. I'm a recently arrived neighbor who frequently commutes by bike interested in figuring out what works for the local experts. Seattle riders, how do YOU prevent your bike from being stolen when going shopping, for work, dining, etc?

  • What is your lock like? Have you had locks broken into, and how has this impacted your safety strategy?
  • Are you locking frame and both wheels? Seats? Some combination thereof? Using pin-locks?
  • Are there no-go times, places or environments (broadly, specific bike racks, neighborhoods, times of day) where you avoid parking your bike?
  • Do you have a "beater" you take for certain rides and a main bike you use for others? Has the risk of theft impacted your purchase decision?
  • Is your bike insured?

Thank you for your valuable input!
