International student in Germany as guest student —> residence permit advice? (USA)

Hi everyone,

I’m in a unique situation regarding my status in Germany and I’m hoping to get some advice as I really don’t know anyone else who has been in my exact scenario.

I’m currently in Germany as a guest student from the U.S. (not Erasmus or study abroad through a U.S. uni, not fully matriculated, just free-floating €300 paid and done) where I will be auditioning into a master’s degree next week with the hopes of being accepted and therefore staying here through the summer into the Fall, then becoming an official student at the Hochschule. I was invited out early in the first place by a professor I want to study with in the degree.

I arrived here March 21st and the Sommer semester lasts until mid-July. This is obviously more than 90 days, so I had the intention of applying for a residence permit — I have TK insurance, registered my address (Anmeldung) and have proof of everything else needed for an Aufenthaltstitel (residence permit) as an international student… *except* official matriculation through the Hochschule. I have an official letter from the Hochschule saying I am welcome here as a guest student, but have no Ausweis (ID), student number, etc. as I have no reason to matriculate yet.

In short*:

  1. Do I have enough to qualify for applying for a residence permit right now? If (when) my audition is successful — only saying “when” bc the invitation to study here early by a professor bodes well for my outcome — and I’m offered a place, would that make my case strong before the 21st of June? Would that be enough?

Or:

  1. Do I have to eat it and leave the country for 90 days before coming back again in October for the degree? I’m really not sure. I’d of course prefer to stay here and could prove I have the funds for it etc.

All advice is welcome and thanks very much for reading. Please be kind as this is my first time going through these things in Germany :,)
