Are tapes absolutely necessary?

I’ve sewed a 3 volume of Manacled and forgot to use tapes - are tapes/the fabric under the French link stitch absolutely necessary, or can I glue my spine from here and put the cheesecloth over it?

I’ve already tried to get a tape underneath, but it is extremely difficult:(

Hi, where do my fellow Europeans buy book cloth?
I’m based in Denmark, and have only found it on Amazon.
