Why did my partner still die of asphyxiation (self inflicted) 10 days after being revived at the scene?
Hi, firstly thank you for taking time to read this. 18 months ago I (45 F) found my parter ( M 37) hanging in our garage.
He was a non smoker, 5’10” and a healthy weight.
He used a medium thickness synthetic fibre rope to perform a low hanging, there was no neck injury except for ligature marks.
My question is, how come he still died after I was able to revive him with CPR?
I don’t think he was hanging long, I mean how long can you be hanging for before you’re beyond being revived at the scene?
I performed CPR until the ambulance came and though I’d managed to get him breathing again and a pulse, they still shocked his heart a few times before rushing us to hospital.
He was on life support for 4 days until his mother came over from Australia and ordered his life support be switched off. I had no say as I wasn’t legal next of kin and she also banned me from the hospital as she blamed me. I won’t go in to details about all that here as my questions are more medical.
how long could he have been hanging for in order to still be revived?
does a doctor have any legal obligations if someone is on life support but could recover if next of kin decides they want to switch it off?
he survived a further 5 days off life support in a coma, so does that mean he had a better chance of survival if he had stayed on life support?
There’s so much I don’t understand about it all but these are my medical queries.
Thank you in advance for your opinions
