Nakba Day film screening: Palestine 36

Next Friday on May 15, the OKC chapter of Democratic Socialists of America (OKC DSA) is hosting a screening of Palestine 36 at the Oklahoma Film Exchange, in commemoration of the 78th anniversary of the Nakba. This it to not only remember what had been lost but to also remember stories of defiance, resistance, and hope. The film tells the story of the Great Arab Revolt more than a decade before the founding of the State of Israel, when the people of Palestine bravely resisted British rule. Stay afterward for a discussion on the lessons of history and how we can apply them to liberation struggles today.

The Oklahoma City Bombing: Domestic Blowback

We are two and a half weeks past the 31st anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing. The deadliest domestic terror attack in American History. We are past the marathons, the memorials, and the spectacle that this time of year brings. However, we still choose to reflect on the 168 lives lost and a city changed forever. Although this tragedy means so much to Okies all over the state, we understand this is just a small footnote of settler colonialism and imperialism’s violent nature. Here is a statement written by our chapter in regards to this tragedy, why it happened and what we can do for the victims and this city.

Join us on the first Sunday of June for a virtual discussion on "Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions: The Global Struggle for Palestinian Rights" by Omar Barghouti.

Drawing a direct parallel to the South African anti-apartheid movement, Barghouti presents BDS as a non-violent, international framework designed to exert economic and moral pressure on israel to secure Palestinian rights and compliance with global law.

To receive Zoom info, RSVP at https://actionnetwork.org/events/okcdsa-june-book-club-bds

Our minimum wage has been stuck in 2009. It wasn’t enough then, and it’s only gotten harder to afford rent, food, gas, medical bills, and everything else. If State Question 832 passes, 1 in 8 Oklahomans will see a raise in wages.

Benefits of a living wage:

- keeps up with inflation

- increases job satisfaction

- strengthens local economy

- financial security = safer communities

Let’s build an economy that works for workers! Vote YES to raise the minimum wage on June 16, 2026

- Segudirad economica = comunidades seguras

¡Hagamos una economía que funcione para los trabajadores! Vota SÍ para aumentar el sueldo mínimo el 16 de Junio, 2026

Let’s fight for our bread and enjoy our roses! Join us on May Day, Friday, May 1st, to learn about and celebrate International Workers Day at our two-part event!

We will first meet at Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library, to learn about the labor movement and Oklahoma’s specific history, followed by a presentation on building towards a general strike in 2028. Doors open at 4 PM and we will wrap at 6 PM. Max attendance is 80, so please RSVP: https://actionnetwork.org/events/okcdsa-may-day-2026

After the library, we’ll celebrate with a solidarity fair just down the road at Calle Dos Cinco Plaza, where we’ll have free food and drink (with many dietary options), childrens’ activities, a panel of labor organizers, and close out with live performances of music from the legendary singer and communist Victor Jara. The party starts at 6 PM and goes to 10 PM.

OKC Democratic Socialists of America has had the pleasure of organizing this year’s May Day events with help from Indivisible Oklahoma, 50501, Cooperative OKC, Starbucks Workers United. and several other workers organizations. We look forward to seeing you all at May Day!
