Would medically necessary food count as carry on exception?
Flying international with Delta next week (JFK to AMS) and have a relatively new dietary restriction that won't be accommodated by the meal selections available. I'm very used to flying but this is the first time traveling since developing my allergy so I don't want to risk trying to find safe food at the airport.
I don't mind packing my own food at all but my carry on/personal item allowance is going to be pretty tight. I know that generally, carried on medical supplies and devices are considered 'additional items' and don't count towards your carry on allowance. If I were to pack a separate lunch box with just my safe food, would that be considered medical supplies and allowed as a third bag?
I'm aware that, in the end, the gate agents will have final say, but just wondering if it's even worth trying or would always be a no.
ETA: Just to clarify, I'm aware the food is allowed and know what I can/can't pack as far as TSA, just wondering if it'd be allowed as a separate, third, carry on bag
And since people tend to worry about it, I will keep it under the seat in front of me with my other personal item so I'm not taking up extra bin space. I only plan to bring a backpack and purse on board right now so I can get a roller bag if I have to but I'd rather bring a lunch box i already have, if i can. It's not about getting extra space.
