Hello! I am working on cleaning out the home of my late parents, and they have a lot of very old, unusual items. I am contacting reputable auction houses at some point, but am first trying to educate myself a bit about some of the items so that I don’t get soaked! This piece, about 18” tall, has been in their home for as long as I can remember, probably was acquired before I was born, even, which means they likely bought it in the 1950s soon after they married. It’s a 19th century piece, the black portion is smooth and shiny but I don’t know if it’s slate or ebony or what. The pendulum will need to be reattached (although I was able to perch it carefully to take this photo). Otherwise it’s in very good visual condition. No markings on the back or bottom. Can anyone tell me anything about it, or make a guesstimate as to its approximate worth? I do know that it’s only worth is what someone is willing to pay for it, but I’m just curious about an appraisal value. Thanks in advance!

I’ve really been enjoying Flashcard Frenzy, and am very pleased with how much I’ve been able to remember, BUT…suddenly this morning it is having the same listening problems that were rampant a couple of months ago. I am saying ridiculously easy words, saying them clearly, my accent is very good…yet it’s not accepting my pronunciations even when they are identical to theirs. “Enorme” for enormous, “terrazza” for terrace, “aeroporto” for airport, etc. I bailed out after failing to clear even the first level today, which is objectively absurd considering I finished first in the Diamond League last week! Duo staff, if you’re here reading this, please check on this because it’s very frustrating!
