looks like my best bud has epilepsy. what's next?
our boy turned three years old last month, and yesterday morning, he had his first seizure. grand mal, under a minute, singular episode (not a cluster.)
i took him to the vet this morning, and after a blood panel to check for anything toxic or kidney/liver red flags (blood work looked great, healthy weight, heart sounded perfect,) the current diagnosis is epilepsy. no medication, but if his hypothetical future episodes hit a certain frequency or length, his vet and i will begin discussing the next step in that department.
she gave me some print-outs on canine epilepsy, and we discussed some basics (like concerns with oral flea/tick preventatives,) but i've never had a dog with epilepsy before, and the diagnosis is overwhelming. not end of the world, not even a quality of life change for him right now, just... overwhelming.
any suggestions? warnings? words of advice to best help my fella here navigate his diagnosis? i understand he's not *guaranteed* to have another seizure at all, but the chances are high and even higher due to breed (something i hadn't known before this situation,) and i wanna have everything in my toolkit possible to do right by him.
