From doomscrolling to recipe commonplacing

I have plenty of saved recipes everywhere since COVID because TikTok and Reels has a lot of recipe content then for everyone at home to relieve boredom (remember Dalgona coffee and microwave cupcake?)

I genuinely liked the few I tried and I cooked almost daily during those 2 years of being cooped up at home. I’m starting to catalogue my favorite/frequently used recipes into a commonplace journal as the content bloat from all these saved places became way too much to remember.

As these get penned down on paper, my digital bloat reduces as well. I’m also getting my parents to write down their signature recipes in my book for future safekeeping.

PS: This book was gifted by an ex-boss who bought it off the streets of India. The paper quality is really good and I really love the handmade Indian textile cover.

Travelers for eki stamp collecting

The TN format is just perfect for stamp collecting - sizeable and yet portable and flexible enough to collect various stamps from any location. I had so much fun taking it out on a stamp hunting journey during my travels. The red TN has been current favorite based on how it is slowly gaining patina.

Fish/Bird Theory

There’s a saying in the artists circle that when stuck, draw fishes/birds. Because they can appear in any colour combination and have easy shapes, they assist with creative blocks. For me personally, I found it quite effective and tend to be able to flow more creatively after a fish drawing session.

In my pages here, I’ve used it to test some other colour theory principles and because I didn’t like them, this became a critique page for what I need to improve on in future.

Lava Lamp Series 02

I carved some stamps so I decided to make some new cards inspired by movements in a lava lamp. It comes from the idea that if you stare at a lava lamp long enough, you sometimes imagine/see shapes within it.
You may scroll to the end to see the carved stamps and the process of stamping that I tested out.

Materials: Acrylic linen textured paper (see close up for ref), Sachihata stamping ink, Acrylic markers
- Signed and numbered

Other series for trade:
• Orchard Series 01

UPDATE:
Available cards: 1,2,4

Orchard Series 01

Just discovered this sub and thought I’d join in on the fun. A berry orchard painting that I’ve split into a series of 6 cards. Created using a more casual sketchbook style technique, the art isn’t as perfect or finished. I’ve attached a photo of the starting process.

Materials: Acrylic markers, Canson Bristol paper
Signed and numbered

P/S: Located in SE Asia so trading may take a longer time for those in the West. Only trade if you’re willing to wait.

UPDATE:
Cards available: 2,3,4,6

About creativity and desk tools

A favorite entry on creativity as told by Eckhart Tolle, which featured some of my favorite quotes said by him. And also pondering on what makes a ‘Better Desk’ by the writing/creating tools used on one’s desk. For some it could be just a pen, but for others it could be other various apparatus. These are some of the topics I enjoy pondering and researching in my commonplace.

5 minute food journal

I love food. 🥘 🍱 I went from keeping lists of places to eat which was very boring (and sometimes I cannot remember the dishes I described).. to keeping a visual food journal. But I didn’t want to spend too much time on it, but I also wanted it to commemorate all my good eats.

So I turned it into a 5-minute journal. 📓 5 minutes the the time I allotted myself to sketch the food when it arrives at my table, before I get to eat. I sometimes go back to add more details to the drawing, but the first 5 minutes is used to capture the overall visual.

Did not expect Tomoe River Paper to hold up well with Acrylic paint

I’ve never thought to use tomoe river paper for art as it is mostly for fountain pens and that smooth writing feel. I had a new complementary notebook included with a journal purchase, made with blank tomoe paper.

Decided to use it as a study sketchbook rather than buying a new one, the paper was thin but I thought I would just use drier mediums. However, I tried my acrylic markers on it and the paper held up miraculously well - slight warping and minimal ghosting. It’s honestly a much better result than I expected. Plus, the paper’s smoothness and cream colour made the colours more vibrant for some reason. I didn’t even need to edit the photo I took, the vibrancy is unreal. What a pleasant result from experimentation!
