Recent Rockies Transactions 5/5-5/9

Another set of minor transactions over the past week.

5/5/26: Maique Basanta, LHP - Colorado Rockies signed free agent LHP Maique Basanta to a minor league contract. Not much information can be found on the Venezuelan LHP, but I did find his Tik Tok.

5/6/26: Erasmo Ramirez, RHP - Colorado Rockies signed RHP Erasmo Ramirez to a minor league contract. The 36-year-old veteran looks to continue his career with the Rockies, most recently representing Nicaragua in the WBC. Ramirez has also bounced around several teams (SEA (2x), TB(2x), BOS, NYM, DET, WSH, MIN). He will take the mound for the Isotopes vs. OKC (5/12/26). Ramirez could also be a fill-in for the Rockies' starting pitchers if changes were to be made. Ramirez also brings a 5 Pitch Mix to contribute to the Rockies' multi-pitch strategy (Erasmo Ramirez Baseball Savant Stats). Career Stats as follows.

Jordan Romano, RHP - Colorado Rockies, signed RHP Jordan Romano to a Minor league contract, Rookie Affiliate. The 33-year-old Canadian, who was recently released by the Angels, will make a start with the ACL Rockies. Romano has also pitched for Philadelphia and Toronto, which in 2021-2023 had impressive 20+-save seasons, with 36 saves in 22' & 23'. Romanos Career Stats.

Jeff Criswell, RHP - Colorado Rockies, sent RHP Jeff Criswell on a rehab assignment to Hartford Yard Goats. I talked about Criswell's return in the last transactions post. Recovering from Tommy John surgery, Criswell looks to continue where he left off in the Rockies' rotation. Update: Jeff Criswell moved up from Spokane (A+) after 2 appearances. As of writing this, Criswell has also made two appearances for the Yard Goats (AA)

5/9/26 Seth Halverson, RHP, & Jimmy Herget, RHP - Most Obvious, Seth Halverson, RHP - returns to the Rockies rotation after Jimmy Herget, RHP, was placed on the bereavement list. Thoughts and prayers to his family. The flamethrower has already made a return during the Rockies' visit to Philadelphia and will most likely return to AAA once Herget returns, even though there are a few other relievers/players that need some time in AAA, but who am I, I don't call the shots.

What do you think about these transactions? Are the veteran signings something worthwhile? Will we see any other promotions from AAA this month to help our offense? I'll continue to do these weekly transactions until my boss tells me to get back to work. kthx bye. Go Rockies!

Todd Helton records his first of two career three-home run games in a 15-8 Rockies win over the Montreal Expos. Helton would have his best season in 2000. Finishing with an 8.9 WAR, .372 Avg, 1.162 OPS, 42 HRs, and career highs in Hits (216), Doubles (59), RBIs (147).

Finishing with an All-Star selection, Silver Slugger award, and 5th in MVP voting, falling behind Jeff Kent, Barry Bonds, Mike Piazza, and Jim Edmonds.

His 5th in MVP votes put him in front of notable names like Vladimir Guerrero Sr, Andruw Jones, Sammy Sosa, Chipper Jones, Greg Maddux, and Randy Johnson.

In the spirit of how well the bullpen is doing, let's look back to April 24th, 2010.

Aaron Cook pitches his seventh and final complete game at Coors Field, which remains a career record for the ballpark.

In 111 pitches and 33 batters faced, Cook was able to defeat the Miami Marlins with his final line:

Did you know that across all of the pitchers to take the mound for the Rockies this year, there are 9 different styles of pitch a batter could face.

Here is something else to think about: Sugano's Four Seam is not identical to Dollander's. If you account for the combination of these 9 different pitches by each pitcher, the number goes up to 86. A combination of 86 different weapons that the Rockies have utilized so far, which has led to a bright early season for the bullpen.

Here are some highlights I've pulled from Baseball Savant.

In terms of Run Value / 100 Pitches, Feltners 4-Seam, Quintana's Slurve, and Lorenzen's Slider are the most effective in keeping the opposing team from scoring. (In simple terms. I could go on forever about the nerdy math stuff behind Run Value. Also, I used the RV/100 pitches due to the small sample size of the # of pitches.)

Top 10 RV/100 from 86 Pitcher/Pitch Sample

Looking at the exciting stats, Dollander's Curveball, Bernardino's Changeup, and Feltner's Changeup lead in WHIFF %; these are the pitches opponents think they can hit but that result in a swing and a miss.

Top 10 WHIFF% from 86 Pitcher/Pitch Sample

K% shows the number of strikeouts per pitch when looking to sit batters down; Senzatela's Curveball, Dollander's Curveball, and Sweeper lead the team. In this category, we see 5 different pitch types, demonstrating the diversity of the arsenal in these 2 strike situations.

Strike out % from the 86 Pitcher/Pitch Sample

Lastly, the data that surprised me the most is that 15 different types of pitches have yet to be hit against, with a 0 BA. Note: These pitches have been thrown at least 10 times; this list gets larger at >10 pitches.

BA based on Pitch

The large pitching arsenal could be the secret to pitching at Coors.

Also, if I misinterpreted the data in any form, let me know, im new to using Baseball Savant :)

TL: DR - A stats nerd shows you that the high-pitch mix strategy is proving effective and wants to show you the leaderboard for pitch mix in the Rockies bullpen.
