Store Manager made fun of me for returning a cheap item… Employee apologized on his behalf.

Backstory: I was going to make my daughter’s graduation cap but realized I didn’t have time. I work two jobs, and I have two under 4. It’s a lot. A friend offered to make some of the items to go on it, so I went to return a bunch of stickers and a few pieces of scrapbook paper no longer needed. All of the stickers and one piece of scrapbook paper was on one receipt. The only other piece of scrapbook paper was on its own receipt on my rewards card. Since it was an online order, a manager had to approve it…. For 84 cents. I apologized to the employee but I said I would rather return it and someone else use it than it just waste away at home.

Poor girl calls the manager and he doesn’t respond. She calls again and he finally comes up. Guy looks at the screen, scoffs, and says “who returns something for 84 cents…? Go ahead. Put your card in. Get your 84 cents.” Then walks away. The poor employee who was SO kind apologized profusely and said that she was embarrassed how he acted. I told her it didn’t reflect her behavior and I was so thankful she was so kind and she shouldn’t have to apologize on his behalf.

I was really irritated. Gas is almost $4 a gallon here. I work two jobs to make ends meet, also he said it in front of my 4 year old who is wise past her years, so I was embarrassed.

I contacted corporate and just explained that I was ashamed at how he acted but also worried how he treats his employees. A teenager should not have to apologize for a grown man’s behavior. They gave me a gift-card, which I said they absolutely did not have to do. I was just shocked how he behaved… what if I was worse off…? 84 cents means a lot to a LOT of people now a days…

An hour later I miss a call on my cell… the Michaels manager CALLED ME. He half ass apologized, and tried to gaslight me by saying he didn’t “mean” to make me feel bad, and he wasn’t trying to shame me for a small return and that it “wasn’t like that.” Etc… Truthfully I saw the summary of what he said on my phone and I didn’t even want to listen. I hope he got his ass chewed out… but also, at least it sounds like they actually did something…?
