Bird entangled in yarn and leg is dangling. Please advise!

Hi Everyone,

I heard a lot of commotion in my backyard and went to see what was happening. I found a bird (I think it’s a house sparrow) dangling upside down from one of our mini tree/plants and two other birds trying to attack it. I think they were mockingbirds (white stripes under their wings and larger than the sparrow). There were two other sparrows in the area as well. I’ve read that both species can be territorial and aggressive.

I managed to get the bird off and put him in a dark box. I managed to get most of the yarn off of it but his claw/leg is completely dangling. I’ve researched sparrows before and I know they’re considered an invasive species and I’ve never had luck finding rehabbers in the past.

Does anyone have recommendations and/or rehabs that will take sparrows in the Los Angeles, CA area? Or guidance on what I should do next?

Like I mentioned earlier, the bird is currently in the box, its well-ventilated, and it’s in a quiet area to minimize stress. I’m leaving it alone and did not handle it more than I needed to in order to get it off the tree and cut the yarn off.

Thank you in advance!!

Edit: I should also mention that it was bleeding from the entanglement/leg and the tree branch was stained with the remnants of the injury. The bird is no longer bleeding from the injury and it does seem very alert. However, there is exposed bone. :(

2nd Edit:

Thank you everyone!! I contacted the CA Wildlife Center and based off the photos, they also thought it was a Northern Mockingbird. They allowed me to get there an hour after closing since it’s about an hour commute for me. The baby bird was very active, chirping, and somehow kept going from one side of the box to the other despite its injury. They were very optimistic- it will be quarantined and then introduced to the other mockingbird babies for rehab. 💖

Also, I no longer think it was attacked by the two Northern Mockingbirds… they were probably it’s parents. 😫😭 I had never had birds fly so close to me like that and I 100% originally thought it was a house sparrow so I assumed the worst…🫠
