Day 14: What is the WORST quote associated with Urdnot Wrex?

Hey everyone, welcome to day 14 of “I’m Commander Shepard and these are my favorite quotes on the Citadel.” Yesterday's quote was close, but Wrex's quote about being on Saren's payroll was the overall victor (although an honorable mention goes to his Priority: Tuchanka quote to Shepard).

As before, the categories of "best", "worst" and "most iconic" are intentionally left to be open to interpretation, since there are so many characters these prompts are being directed to, and I'd rather not constrict discussion of the prompts and how they apply to characters by limiting it to one particular interpretation.

Drop at least one Wrex quote you’d nominate as his worst quote, and (if you want) say why it’s your pick. I’ll tally everything up and post the winner for Day 15.

Day 13: What is the BEST quote associated with Urdnot Wrex?

Hey everyone, welcome to day 13 of “I’m Commander Shepard and these are my favorite quotes on the Citadel.” This time, we're now moving onto everyone's favorite krogan battlemaster, Wrex!

As before, the categories of "best", "worst" and "most iconic" are intentionally left to be open to interpretation, since there are so many characters these prompts are being directed to, and I'd rather not constrict discussion of the prompts and how they apply to characters by limiting it to one particular interpretation.

EDIT: As it seems that this day will come very much down to the wire since there are just so many good Wrex lines, day 14 might be postponed for another day to allow upvotes to be revealed on all posts.

Day 12: What is the MOST ICONIC quote associated with Garrus Vakarian?

Hey everyone, welcome to day 11 of “I’m Commander Shepard and these are my favorite quotes on the Citadel.”

First off: thank you for all the incredible discussion over the past few days. I honestly didn’t expect this series to garner this much interactions within the community (collectively, there’s been over 2,200 comments (!!!!) with people sharing/debating on their thoughts/opinions) and it’s been a blast reading everyone’s takes (and seeing how differently people interpret the prompts).

Since a bunch of new folks have joined recently (most notably a huge uptick in discussion now that we’re getting to the alien squad mates), I wanted to restate one key thing up front so everyone’s on the same page.

I flagged this early on, but the categories of "best", "worst" and "most iconic" are intentionally left to be open to interpretation, since there are so many characters these prompts are being directed to, and I'd rather not constrict discussion of the prompts and how they apply to characters by limiting it to one particular interpretation.

For example, best has sometimes been interpreted by the community as the line that best summarizes the character’s arc within the games (e.g. Garrus’ “black and white” line, or Kaidan’s integrity line), or the line that best matches their personality (e.g. Joker’s “this is all Joker’s fault” line, or Ashley’s “with all due respect” line). Another way people sometimes interpret best is “the quote that hits the hardest” — whether that’s because it’s the most sincere, the funniest, or the most emotionally memorable for you personally.

Same idea with worst quote. For some characters, “worst” might mean their cringiest line. For others, it might be their most out-of-pocket take given the context of the story (regardless of whether the character is "right" from a pragmatic standpoint), or the line that feels the most out of character. And for more morally dubious characters down the line, “worst” could just as easily mean the most renegade, the most selfish, or the most sinister line — which is part of what I think makes the discussion fun.

As for iconic, I’ve noticed a lot of people interpret it as either the character’s most popular quote, or the quote you think they’re most instantly recognized by (the one you can hear in their voice immediately). Both interpretations are totally valid.

The point I hope I’m conveying is that I always intended for these prompts to be a springboard into discussion, not a litmus test of who has the most “correct” answer.

This is also the reason I’ve been largely silent on giving my own takes on what’s “best / worst / most iconic” — because I don’t want to inadvertently skew or stifle the discussion. There are admittedly a few quotes the community chose in other categories that I'm personally a bit on the fence on, but again, I've intentionally removed myself from the discussion as I'm the facilitator.

Thank you again for all the incredible discussion/banter — it’s been an absolute blast. When this table is done, I’ve got a special bonus in mind before we move onwards to the Suicide Mission team for Mass Effect 2.

Alright, onto Garrus’ most iconic quote!

Senna consulting his grandmother (WIP) (OC)

This is my WIP recreation of a moment featuring two of my all-time favorite quarians—from a Mass Effect novel that doesn’t get talked about nearly enough (and which in my opinion is equal to, and in some ways, surpasses Drew's novels): Annihilation.

Anyway, consider this my official PSA / TED Talk to go and read Annihilation (and if you do audiobooks, Tom Taylorson absolutely nails all the alien voices.)

Day 10: What is the BEST quote associated with Garrus Vakarian?

And we're back with day 10 of "I'm Commander Shepard and these are my favorite quotes on the Citadel!" Apologies for the slight delay with this one, things got a bit too busy the past couple days. But that's okay, because we're back with Archangel himself, Garrus Vakarian!

As before, drop at least one Garrus quote you’d nominate as his best quote, and (if you want) say why it’s your pick. I’ll tally everything up and post the winner for Day 11.

You know, something tells me that this is going to be one of the most unanimous days we've done so far. Just a feeling.

As before, drop at least one Ashley quote you’d nominate as her worst quote, and (if you want) say why it’s your pick. I’ll tally everything up and post the winner for Day 9.

We've seen some of the crew's extranet history, like Grunt and Jack. I'd like to see us now do the same for the rest of the crew. I'll go first with a post-cured Genophage wrex:

"How to stop quads from chafing"

"Quads chafing best treatment"

"Abusive sexual relationship signs"

"Trapped in my own bathroom how to get out"

Ngl Mass Effect CCs like Kala and ParagoN7 literally carrying the ME5 hype train atm.

Also this is obviously just a silly bit, there's no pressure or expectation for either of them to carry ME5's hype, nor is there any right or wrong way to enjoy Mass Effect/be hopeful or sceptical about ME5/the future of Mass Effect.

Hey everyone — Day 5 of “I’m Commander Shepard and these are my favorite Mass Effect quotes on the Citadel” is here! For Day 4, it was a close call but Kaidan's integrity quote just manage to beat his jerks and saints one.

Now it's time to move onto Kaidan's worst quote (for those that are just recently joining us, worst in this context is left open to interpretation - it could mean the cringiest line, the most out of pocket comment, the most OOC quote, etc.)

As before, drop at least one Kaidan quote you’d nominate as his worst quote, and (if you want) say why it’s your pick. I’ll tally everything up and post the winner for Day 6.

P.S. There was an error in yesterday's tallying (forgot that upvotes don't show until 24 hours after posting), so I've corrected Joker's most iconic quote to reflect what actually everyone decided on, which was his "I'm the best pilot" quote. Sorry about that!

u/looploveslore — 12 days ago

Hey everyone — Day 4 of “I’m Commander Shepard and these are my favorite Mass Effect quotes on the Citadel” is here! As you know, we've now wrapped up our first character with two of Joker's most iconic lines for Day 3, which like Day 2, was a tie as discussed/decided by everyone.

The next three days will be dedicated to the Normandy's resident L2 sentinel, Kaidan Alenko! As before, drop at least one Kaidan quote you’d nominate as his best quote, and (if you want) say why it’s your pick. I’ll tally everything up and post the winner for Day 5.

Hey everyone — Day 3 of “I’m Commander Shepard and these are my favorite Mass Effect quotes on the Citadel” is here!

Yesterday's discussion on Joker's worst quote was amazing — so much so we actually had a tie between two quotes — his post-Thessia joke (yikes) and his comments about EDI's new body (double yikes).

Now for Day 3, we're wrapping up our time with our favorite Flight Lieutenant with his most ICONIC quote. As with the previous two days, there's no hard and fast rule as to what you deem as "iconic". For you, it could mean the line you first associate with Joker when you think of him, or it might be the line you think he's most recognized for by the fandom, or something else entirely.

As before, drop one Joker quote you’d nominate as his most iconic, and (if you want) say why it’s your pick. I’ll tally everything up and post the winner for Day 4.

In one of my many replays of the trilogy I got stuck on a big “butterfly effect” thought experiment:

What if Shepard never crossed paths with the squadmates — or, even if they meet Shepard, none of them ever joined the Normandy crew?

For each character, I’m curious to hear people's thoughts about two timelines:

- No-Shepard path: What would they likely be doing instead (career, survival odds, major turning points)? What’s the most plausible fate for them?

- Canon: What specifically changes because Shepard shows up — not just “they live/they die,” but how their worldview, loyalty, and long-term future diverges?

Assume the main storyline still broadly happens: Shepard still becomes a Spectre, forms some kind of team, and pushes the plot forward. Of course, major story beats involving some of the characters might ultimately change some major outcomes for the galaxy (e.g. without Shepard, does Mordin ever cure the Genophage?)

To get the ball rolling, let's set the stage of where they start out before Shepard meets them:

  1. ME1: Garrus (renegade C-Sec detective who hates red tape) Tali (on her pilgrimage/on the run from Saren's men), Wrex (former battlemaster turned mercenary), Liara (archaeologist trapped in a bubble), Ashley (fighting geth on Eden Prime), Kaidan (Staff Lieutenant in the Alliance)

  2. ME2: Mordin (in his Omega clinic), Miranda and Jacob (working with Cerberus), Jack (frozen in cryo on Purgatory), Grunt (in his tank with Okeer), Samara (hunting down Morinth), Thane (assassin in his twilight years), Legion (tailing Shepard), Kasumi (after Keiji's graybox), Zaeed (hunting down Vigo)

  3. ME3 additions: Javik (in stasis), James (Fehl Prime with Delta Squad), EDI (Cerberus AI)

Extra angles I’d love to hear thoughts and theories on:

- Which characters still end up intersecting with Shepard and the Reaper War anyway (just possibly worse positioned)?

- Who thrives/falls without Shepard’s influence — and in what way? How is their personality and values different without even being part of the Normandy crew (or are they unchanged to their canon state)?

Drop your headcanons, “most likely” outcomes, and your most heartbreaking or most ironic possibilities.

Hi everyone — I've put together a simple table to spark a discussion on the best, worst, and most iconic quotes for characters across Mass Effect.

I’m starting with the original Normandy crew, plus the two big bads from ME1.

If you want to play along, drop your opinions in the comments and I’ll tally everything up for the next post.

Future tables are planned for other groups too, including the balance of the Normandy/Tempest crew as well as some of the more major supporting cast across the games.

EDIT: "Iconic" just means the line the character is best known for (e.g. Shepard is best known for saying "I should go"), but "best" doesn't necessarily need to be the most "famous" quote (e.g. some might say Paragon Shep's best quote is during the Arrival DLC to Harbinger, "However insignificant we may be, we will fight, we will sacrifice, and we will find a way! Because that's what humans do!")
