Hi y'all,
I’ve got (well my dad got but he can't use reddit lol) an old Yanmar YN186 tractor that hasn’t been used for about 10 years (not a lot of mileage it was likely used 3-4 times by my granddad and that's it)
We just did a full service: oil change, new oil filter, checked fuel, and bled the system
It started once, ran for a few seconds, then stalled and won’t start again
When I turn the key it just makes the cranking noise (like it’s trying to start but can’t catch yk), there's no smoke, no sputters, just the starter spinning the engine.
What we’ve checked so far:
- Oil level is good
- Fuel tank has new diesel, fuel filter is clean, and we bled the fuel lines
- Battery is charged
- No error lights or obvious leaks
Questions:
- Could this be a fuel delivery issue (pump, injectors, or clogged lines)?
- Could the glow plugs be the problem? How can I test them?
- Should I check the compression or timing?
- Any other stuff I can't think about right now?
Any advice, troubleshooting steps, or personal experiences would be hugely appreciated!
I’m not a mechanic but I’m trying to learn (and I can't deal with my dad grumbling about this lol)
Thanks in advance for your help!
