Hi y'all,

I’ve got (well my dad got but he can't use reddit lol) an old Yanmar YN186 tractor that hasn’t been used for about 10 years (not a lot of mileage it was likely used 3-4 times by my granddad and that's it)

We just did a full service: oil change, new oil filter, checked fuel, and bled the system
It started once, ran for a few seconds, then stalled and won’t start again

When I turn the key it just makes the cranking noise (like it’s trying to start but can’t catch yk), there's no smoke, no sputters, just the starter spinning the engine.

What we’ve checked so far:

  • Oil level is good
  • Fuel tank has new diesel, fuel filter is clean, and we bled the fuel lines
  • Battery is charged
  • No error lights or obvious leaks

Questions:

  1. Could this be a fuel delivery issue (pump, injectors, or clogged lines)?
  2. Could the glow plugs be the problem? How can I test them?
  3. Should I check the compression or timing?
  4. Any other stuff I can't think about right now?

Any advice, troubleshooting steps, or personal experiences would be hugely appreciated!

I’m not a mechanic but I’m trying to learn (and I can't deal with my dad grumbling about this lol)

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hiya

I have been seeing loads of posts like mine but here I still am, humbly requesting your help, fellow orchid lovers.

Because tbf I cannot grasp what’s to do or not do to rescue my orchid. I read everything and its opposite so it is really hard to take the right path.

Therefore if you have any advice, I welcome it - thanks in advance :)

For context:

I bought it two years ago when it was in bloom. Everything was fine.
Last summer I organised myself badly, leading to the plant getting severely dehydrated. It was beginning to bloom but it totally dried out.

From then, I cut the dry parts and did my best to keep it alive, watering but not too much, etc.

However now it’s been 9 months since the plant’s been like on the pics.
A big dried leaf, two green but meh looking ones; the only roots it has are the ones visible on the pics, there are 0 soil roots, and only 4-5 quite dry aerial ones. Obviously no flowers.
It is actually in bark only, draining pot laying on little rocks for nothing to stay wet (although since there are no roots nothing can really rot…).

It’s currently on my bookshelves getting indirect light all day, I spray water on the few roots there are when they’re grey; I soak the bark once a week (like with my cacti) to really give a good watering.

I see a lot of stuff about putting it in water; or in soil to promote growth; or hundreds of other techniques.
Truth is I see it’s not dead, orchids are the best for that, but idk what to do cause whatever I’ve been doing doesn’t work.

If someone could help I’d really appreciate it :)
