snake ID in Malibu Creek State Park

A little past the MASH site on the way to the lake, didn't see it until about four feet away, scared the bejesus out of me so its possible my memory is not accurate.

But,

It was about 4-5 feet long most likely, looked fairly thick (1-2 inches if not more), darker coloring except for some reds or oranges along its back. Didn't see its head, as it slithered away.

I did some research and wonder if its the southern Gartnersnake, but can't be sure. Any ideas? As an East Coaster it was easily the biggest snake I've ever seen in the wild

it was probably 4+ feet long, and if my memory serves it was black/dark brown with some brighter oranges or reds along its spine. didn't see its head. probably a few inches thick at a minimum.

Scared the bejesus out of me

Soban is Sogood

not pictured were their fish pancakes and fish roe stew. everything is very flavorful and the portions are more than generous, and the blackened cod (second photo) might have been one of the best dishes i’ve had since moving to LA.

unbelievably nice staff including the Mom of the house.

can’t recommend it enough
