Over 100 pounds lost and over 6 years maintaining. Here’s my secret:

You guys.

….That’s right. r/loseit is my secret.

I learned everything I needed to start by reading the quickstart guide. I downloaded a calorie tracking app (in 2018, I used MFP I have since very happily switched to Macrofactor). I ordered a digital food scale and a digital (person) scale. I counted my calories and tried to go for walks.

After a few months, I switched from a lurker to a participant. I used the daily accountability challenges, and hung out in the weekly threads. I asked lots of questions in the daily Q&A. I read other people’s experiences, and learned how to set small goals for myself.

6 years later, I’m doing the same thing. Still hanging out in the weekly threads (albeit answering more questions than posing them!), still getting and giving support on relevant posts.

Lifestyle changes are possible, guys. My greatest wish is that everyone can be as successful as I have been. I was obese by 6 years old, and after a lifetime of obesity and failed interventions I truly thought that was just how my life was going to be: I had “fat genes” (or whatever) and that change wasn’t possible.

The me of 8 years ago lived a very different life than I do now. I am a MUCH better cook, and my palate has absolutely exploded. I save money for expensive sports clothing that I wouldn’t have been able to fit a single buttcheek in a decade ago. I make vacation plans around athletic challenges that I really want to do (next up: hiking in the alps!). I can go clothes shopping and come back with some nice pieces that really suit me.

I didn’t lose weight particularly fast, and I still track my calories and weigh myself. But, and I guess this is the big change, tracking my calories does not feel like a punishment. It feels like freedom: I know how to manage my intake to support my alp-hiking-aspirations. I like knowing how much I weigh. I like taking care of myself.

Anyway, the support I’ve gotten here is my big secret. The cat is entirely out of the bag. I hope it becomes your secret too :)

Hey!

This thread is for those who have lost 100+ lbs (~ 45kg , ~7 stone). Welcome to “the club; our meetings are on Thursdays.

100+ lbs is the equivalent of a small adult human. Losing that much weight at a healthy rate can take months to years, and there are many topics that are quite different for this situation than for those who only have smaller amounts to lose.

I hope that this thread can be inspirational for those just setting out to start their journeys.

As with the other weekly thread I participate in, the League of Extraordinary Goalsetters (on Mondays), I will try to provide a prompt for the week, however you are free to move the discussion in any direction you would like or ask any questions you think might be best answered by someone who has lost 100+ lbs.

Today’s Prompt: The Great Loseit Cook-Off

Many of us had to learn how to cook low-calorie meals that we looked forward to and kept us satiated. What’s one of your favorite dinner recipes? Post a calorie count too!

Also, Danna Kashlan, MD will be coming to r/loseit for an AMA on Thursday May 21 at 5PM EST. Come with your questions!

Welcome to the League of Extraordinary Goal Setters! The idea of this weekly thread is to write down goals, and break them up into 7 day chunks by figuring out what specific part of the goal you’re working on during the week, and then checking in with each other how the week went.

Obviously, if you’re here, one of the goals is probably to lose weight. Whether that’s 2 or 200 pounds, it’s not going to be accomplished by doing one single thing today. However, losing weight is absolutely the product of a million small changes — the small things we do each day add up to big changes over time. So, let’s start breaking it on down!

Remember, all threads live and die by comments, so please jump in and support your fellow League members! Check in here with how your week went, and what your goals are for this week. You are of course free to move the discussion in any direction you would like or ask any questions you have.

What’s a small goal you can work towards this week?
