Relink window taking 20+ tried to relink

I'm working on a movie as a sound editor and we are having issues on the mix stage with the relink window. Everything eventually relinks by file name and ID, but it took 24 searches this last time we had to relink. Each search found 10-20 more links until all links were found. We had every folder fully opened in the the finder view in the relink window.
Has anyone ever encountered this? Is there a solution? It wastes a lot of time and is very annoying.
