Building a new post house: 12G or 2110?
I’ve been asked by some friends to help design their new post house. Actually, downsizing and relocating their current one but a complete rebuild. It’s only a few small edit bays and a color (Resolve) suite, and everything is Mac-based, but they need to support some occasional legacy tape ingest/export. Most of the work they do is UHD but some of it is HDR. They currently use a 3G router but plan to replace it in the move. That means their HDR workflows could avoid quadlink if we go 12G.
The question is should I be doing this as a new 2110 shop, or stick with 12G? The bulk of the routing would be from the edit/color computers into the different suites but the occasional need for tape might complicate things. They also have made some investments in nice BVM monitors and Leader scopes which are all 12G capable, and I assume would need a bridge if we go 2110. My gut says stick with 12G and call it a day.
Is there anything I should check out at NAB next week that might help with this decision?
