Advice for getting into Scenic Carpentry?
Hi everyone! I'm looking to get into Scenic Carpentry professionally, but I don't have any formal experience. I've got a BA in theatre production, but that didn't offer me a lot of the kind of training that scenic shops are looking for (I also spent most of my college years focusing on costume design before realizing a little too late that I didn't actually like it). I don't really want to go back to school if I can help it, as I don't have that kind of money to spare. I was thinking about applying to a carpentry apprenticeship, but I don't know if that skill set would transfer over, or if it would help me get scenic carpentry jobs. Any suggestions? I live in Chicago (and am not interested in moving to NY or LA, at least for the time being). I already applied for a Steppen Wolf Scenic Carpentry apprenticeship and got rejected :/ any and all suggestions help! Thank you!
