My First 24 Hours Using Google Messages
As we know, everyone using Samsung Messenger will be forced to switch over to Google Messages at the beginning of July, for God know what reason. I wanted to briefly document my first day of using Google Messages. Yes, I am heavily biased against this switch and think that the fact that Samsung is discontinuing Samsung Messenger is total bullshit, but my experiences here are objective.
Pros:
- I can actually react to messages now and can see reactions on my messages. On Samsung Messenger, it was an additional text message saying that the other person had reacted to my message.
- The themes are neat.
That's it. Those are the only pros I have at this time.
Cons:
- The BIGGEST con: it absolutely eats your battery. My phone has never once gotten below 40% in the three years that I've had it, and Google Messages manages to get it down to 20% before noon. This has apparently been present since at least 2021, with several solutions posed throughout the internet, yet none have worked for me yet. As I type this, my phone has been Fast Charging fora bout two hours and it's only at 50%.
- Cheap look
- Can't quick scroll to the beginning of the messages
- Doesn't wake the screen when I get a message.
- Lags behind what I'm doing. Not lag like it moves slowly, but it always takes several seconds to update the interface. For example, it will show a text message that I haven't read. I click to read it and then go back to my text messages interface, and it will still say that I haven't read it yet for a good several seconds.
That's my takeaway from my first day of using Google Messages. I don't understand why Samsung would discontinue Messenger for such an inferior system, but I can see this driving people away to Apple. We can only hope that since this forced migration is taking place, that Google will actually fix their app.
