How would you write a gender swap musical?
(I deleted and rephrased my original post! My apologies for not being clear enough!)
No i’m not talking about “what if Hamilton was a woman?” Or “i’m rewriting Heathers and now it’s called Harvey’s!”. And i’m also not talking about a “mrs doubtfire” or a “tootsie” type of deal. I’m talking an actual musical about a physical man turning into a physical woman (or the other way around of course) and having to learn what it’s like to be the other gender to be able to transform back.
This idea always intrigued me in movies and tv shows. A classic “walk a mile in their shoes” type of story! But surprisingly i have never seen a musical about an actual gender swap.
I’m curious to see how you guys would take on this challenge. How would you cast the actors? Would you cast a male and female actor that look close to each other, or would you use make-up and only cast 1 actor? What type of story would you portray? Any songs that come to mind? Visual effects? Lighting? And what would your ending be like? I’m very curious to see what y’all come up with! Let’s discuss in the comments!
