Duo 3 as…a soccer camera?

Hey all!

I was researching this weekend and landed on a ReoLink Duo 3 as the most viable dual-lens camera to build a DIY youth soccer match recording rig. There are commercial solutions of course, but they’re $500+ in camera costs and absolutely absurd annual subscription fees.

I’m going to build a little game station on a small trailer with an extendable flag pole arm and the Duo 3 about 30 feet up pointed down for a tactical view of the field, POE down the pole to a battery, switch, Raspberry Pi to record, and Starlink to stream. My calculations say that I can get the field into about a 47 degree vertical FOV which should fit in the ~55 degree the camera offers. Maybe going to build a POE-to-analog unit for the pole top to add two shotgun mics. If it works, might add additional cameras for the sidelines or goal areas. Then everything can sync via GPS time signatures.

Awesome? Insane? Tips for hurdles I haven’t thought of? Trickiest thing is going to be getting the angle right when it’s at ground height before raising the pole, but I think to careful trigonometry and placement will get it right.

Managing Tryout Pools & Player Evaluation

Our small club is running tryouts across different age groups with lots of coaches and families and not a lot of administration. Most coaches are using random email chains and paper notebooks.

Do you use any tools or specialized strategies for keeping track of all this data and helping make sure selection is complete (everyone gets a notification), well done (appropriate leveling for players), and as easy as it can be for the adults?

Managing Try Out Pools and Team Planning

Hey all,

I coach with a small club in Denver, CO and we don't have a lot of infrastructure. As it came to tryout season, I volunteered to help organize the massive amount of data -- registering players and parents, organizing RSVPs, and then rating players and figuring out team assignments and invites.

Our club uses Playmetrics which doesn't really help with this challenge at all, so I've been writing an app named KickScout. I've got it in active use by a couple coaches across our age groups. It handles:

  • Parents register for a tryout group via one group-specific URL (so it can be easily emailed)
  • The URL can be presented as a QR-code for easy on-site registration
  • Coaches can track real-time player ratings and observations during the event on mobile
  • After the fact, coaches can access a sorting grid that allows them to drag-and-drop players across teams/groups and positional areas to build logical teams.
  • When the coach is ready, parents get emailed a notification of the outcomes

I'd love to have some additional folks test it out and can do my best to day-by-day debug and support with data issues. If it sounds like it'd be helpful to you, please let me know!
