UPV Freshie — Dorm/boarding house in Miagao (near UPV)

Hello! I’m an incoming freshman at University of the Philippines Visayas (Miagao campus), and I’m from Eastern Samar, so I’ll be relocating to Iloilo for college.

I’m currently deciding where to stay and I’m open to both UPV dorms and outside boarding houses/apartments.

What I’m looking for:

Location: Walking distance or 1 tricycle ride max from UPV Miagao

Budget: ₱2,000–₱6,000/month

Room setup: Shared (2–4 pax) or solo if within budget

Cooking: Allowed or at least light cooking access

Laundry: On-site or nearby laundry services

Utilities: Reliable water and electricity

Connectivity: WiFi or strong mobile signal

Daily needs: Near carinderias, affordable meals, and sari-sari stores

Transport: Accessible tricycle routes / main road

Room: Study space + decent ventilation condition

Areas I’ve seen mentioned:

Mat-y, Mambatad, Sapa, Baybay, and Poblacion/Quezon St. area.

Queries:

  1. Which is more practical in Miagao: UPV dorms vs outside boarding houses/apartments, in terms of cost, comfort, and daily convenience?

  2. How do UPV dorms usually work in practice (rules, cooking, privacy, overall environment)?

  3. Which nearby areas are the most student-friendly in real experience, especially for food access, transport, and utilities?

  4. Any specific dorms/boarding houses/apartments that are known to be reliable and stable long-term?

Would really appreciate honest, firsthand recommendations. Thank you!

Incoming BS Public Health Freshie at UP Visayas — Any tips, warnings, or things you wish you knew earlier? 😭

Hi, everyone! I’m an incoming BS Public Health freshie at University of the Philippines Visayas and honestly I’m both excited at kinakabahan HAHAHA.

I just wanted to ask current students, alumni, or anyone familiar with the program for advice sana about:

  1. What to expect academically

  2. Which subjects are the hardest / biggest “culture shock”

  3. Study habits that actually work in college

  4. Things you wish you did earlier as a freshie

  5. Org life / social life balance

  6. Survival tips for readings, exams, reporting, and groupworks 😵‍💫

  7. Tips specifically for Public Health students

  8. Things to bring / apps / routines that helped you survive

Also:

• How toxic or manageable is the workload really?

• Is maintaining good grades realistic if you also want a social life?

• What are the professors generally like?

• Any advice for someone aiming for med school in the future?

Would appreciate brutally honest advice too 😭 I’d rather be shocked now than later HAHAHA.

Thank you so much! 💚
