Gas prices (among many things) are about to get way worse: it's a good time to build support for building more transit!
People who are used to heavily subsidized roads will always ask how we're going to afford it, but the question right now is how can we afford not to? Building transit makes us way more resilient to changes in oil prices, it makes life more affordable, it makes our city better, it makes the environment better. Preaching to the choir, I know, but maybe worth repeating!
Beyond more buses and SkyTrain (and the SFU gondola already!), I think it's also a good time to start talking about about proper regional rail! All those people sitting on hwy 1 or 99, just burning gas in traffic, could be on a comfortable electric train going faster than no-traffic speeds. That's about to sound much more appealing to a lot of folks. Side note, but if it's an automated RER/S-Bahn type of rail we could advocate for "SkyTrain Express" or something, maybe an easier pitch than calling it an expansion of the WCE; I think most people's perception of the SkyTrain is way better than for the WCE. Whistler to Chilliwack! (No, obviously not all at once. What's a good IOS?)
Yes, it'll be expensive. The status quo is also hideously expensive, plus it has no redundancy and is actively harming the environment. Transit also provides a bunch of good jobs. There's always a bunch of comments saying "this'll never happen", but it certainly won't if nobody's even talking about it. Now's the time to start, a bunch of people are going to be asking how to make life more affordable and we have an answer.
In case you haven't seen them, Movement YVR is a transit advocacy group. MVX has a pitch for a regional rail system. Their cost estimate is bs but I think the idea is great.
