ID Help: Large 38cm Australian Studio Pottery found in Melbourne. Incised AZf mark
Hi everyone,
I picked up this substantial piece at an estate sale here in Melbourne and would love some help identifying the maker.
It is a heavy stoneware vessel, standing 38cm tall, with a very clear, high-pitched ring when tapped. The exterior has a dark, metallic/bronze-toned slip with very deep sgraffito botanical motifs featuring palm or monstera-like foliage. The carved recesses are filled with a rich oxblood red glaze. The interior is fully vitrified with a smooth, cream-colored glaze.
The base has a clear incised mark that, based on the stroke order and tapering, appears to be AZf or AZt with the last letter in a cursive hand.
I’ve included a close-up of the signature in what I believe is the correct orientation. Has anyone seen this specific hand or signature before?
Any leads would be greatly appreciated!
