Hear me out. I've been told my whole life to "just be yourself" in dating, job interviews, and social situations. But sometimes myself is awkward, says weird jokes, and overthinks everything. When I actually do that, people don't like it. But when I filter myself a little, things go way better. So why do we keep saying this advice like it's gospel when it's clearly not always applicable? When is it actually good advice vs. meaningless platitude? Or they just don't have any good advice to tell in the first place
