Questions from a minor in Melbourne
I recently talked with my therapist about medically transitioning. I’m 17 and a binary trans male. I can’t do anything without parental consent, but they recommended I find a specialist to talk to so they know me already by the time I turn 18 and can consent to HRT. They gave me some recommendations, but I’d also like to get some input from people who might have gone through with it already.
My parents aren’t crazy about it, so I want to make it easier on them, financially at least. Is there some way to get the cost of HRT or top surgery covered? I have no experience with this kind of thing, so I’m really not sure where to start. I’d also like to know which places are of better quality, or have shorter wait times, or have experience with young people. Just want to see what would fit my situation best.
One final question: Is there some way I can get top surgery sooner? I was surprised to learn from my therapist that you need to be evaluated by 2 psychologists or one physician. I’m kind of worried about that, because I already have a hard time putting my thoughts into words. It was something I was hoping to get done much sooner.
