Title! Recently went to O’ahu for vacation and me and my gf really loved it there for a lot of reasons! I did majority of the planning about 5 months worth before hand also took time to learn about the culture and history as I felt that was important before going. I’ll cut out a lot of details but basically I’m here to ask will it be doable for us.

We already had savings and are adding to it everyday and the goal is to go to Hawaii with about 50-60K in savings. Is that enough to get by even in the worst of circumstances? We are only taking all of our clothes with us. Everything else (besides a few electronics) will be sold off before we do and we aren’t having a car shipped either. Still trying to figure out where we will want to live (renting) but obvs a lot of time to figure out which neighborhood works best for us.

We also plan to have jobs there before we go but we’re not banking on that which is why we want to save so much in case there’s issues. Do landlords like renting to people coming over but aren’t yet there? On my end I’m reaching a new age milestone next year and feel like it’s the perfect time for a life reset and I’m pretty committed to making this move but want to be as prepared and informed as I can be. Any feedback appreciated!

Hi! Recently visited O’ahu and I loved it! All the usual stuff aside I fell in love with how walkable Honolulu is and the public transport options. I live on the mainland and in my city we have ZERO public transportation. Yes you read that right and to make it worse the city was designed that way on purpose (insane). I’ve also been to New York previously but it wasn’t until my recent O’ahu trip that I realized walkability and public transport is actually a huge must for me.

I can’t afford a car and obviously it’s basically a necessity for everyday life. (I use uber to get around for now) but wow I walked basically everywhere during my stay and it was fantastic. Also knowing that majority of the things I could need or want were a walk or bus ride away (rail too) was life changing since I’m not used to those being options at all. It made me want to go/be out more simply cause I can without the worry of a car. I will say I explored everywhere except the North Shore. Waimānalo was probably my favorite part of the island. All the nature was amazing, I enjoyed seeing and being around more locals/natives than tourists and the slower pace was a great change from the busy city!

Not sure how many people give a shoutout to the walkability and public transport of Honolulu but I certainly will. It was definitely one my favorite aspect of my trip lol. Also all the city bike stations were a nice thing to see as well. Just giving people the option of using these is really nice and thoughtful. Again we don’t have any of this where I live and I am just in amazement I’ve been having to live like this when this stuff could be so much better.
