ELI5 Why was Beijing called Peking? Pronunciation

The j and k sounds aren't similar. I'm Chinese American and the real way to say that consonant is like "dz" and that is nothing like a k sound either. Why did they write it that way?

Science department has more Fs than other departments

Our admin sometimes gets on our back about this. But the science teachers feel they are doing their best and there are other unacknowledged factors. English and math classes enjoy much smaller class sizes with frequent second adults in the room since their subject is a four-year graduation requirement. They also do not teach freshmen during the last period of the day, and science teachers do.

I've taught 9th grade biology almost every year of my 11 years teaching. Bio is always the freshman class with the highest fail rate. In any school I've taught at. We put a lot of thoughtful interventions in place to help students succeed, but sometimes we get annoyed at the unfair comparisons to other subjects.

Does your school see similar trends?

*Neighbor's yard

This tree has branches pushing into my yard and it is also touching some low power lines in the alley. I want to get a wood chip drop in my backyard (I have no front driveway) but I don't think I can since the overhead clearance is too low for the truck.

Neighbors are renters who don't speak much English.

What can I do to reduce the negative effects of this invasive tree?

Our district recently made a policy where students are not to have their phones from the beginning of the school day through the end. Does anybody else do this in high school? I want to hear about how you track and enforce accountability in this system.

Currently we collect phones in a numbered wall pocket at the start of every class period. Students get their phone back during passing period and lunch. The wall pocket allows me to see the phones and get a pretty good idea of who's complying when I begin each class.

I am worried that for the whole day ban, my school admin will not have practical ideas for how to enforce it. Like they will say students should keep their phone in their locker, where it's impossible for a teacher to confirm. So I'm worried it will devolve into an "out of sight" policy which is very taxing on the teacher to enforce.

I do think we need an all day ban, but how can we enforce it?
