Egg Flip

Egg Flip

Yeah, everyone’s been mixing the same old 2000s Death & Co Jeff Morgenthaler stuff for the past 20 years. Don’t get me wrong, I love it as well. But let’s get back. Like way the fuck back.

Today I mixed myself an Egg Flip, as per Jerry Thomas’ 1862 How to Mix Drinks. There’s this sticks and stones approach to it that just seems so cool. Back in the day they could mix not only a decent, but a great cocktail with a fraction of what we have today, so let’s just give it a try.

45ml brandy
1 egg yolk
15ml triple sec
10ml simple syrup

Shaken in a 1930s silver cocktail shaker

Double strained into a funky 20s-ish chilled glass

Grated nutmeg all over it

Where’s the egg? This just tastes good and not egg-ish at all. The egg lends a velvety texture without the egg-ish taste. This is amazing and I’ll definitely mix it again 👍

First serious tie

First time posting! I don’t wear suits or ties at all. Not for work or for anything, for that matter. That said, recently I started doing a little research before getting myself a nice new suit (not this one) for a couple weddings I’ll attend this year, and ended up getting myself this Paul Smith silk tie for relatively cheap.

I’m in love with it, and it really sounds like fun to keep looking for cool ties, even though I don’t wear them often.

Please forgive the half-assed knot, I still need some practice

I’ve said here before on a drunken rant: I love Manhattans. Naturally, when I stumbled upon the Double Barrel recipe, I had to try it:

1 part rye whiskey (Jim Beam Rye, since rye supply is shamefully limited in Brazil)
1 part sweet vermouth (Punt e Mes, my latest love affair)
1 part dry vermouth (Noilly Prat, can’t go wrong with it)
2 dashes Angostura
2 dashes Angostura Orange
Obnoxiously long lemon twist

Stirred and strained into chilled Nick and Nora glass

This is just so good! A lower-but-not-quite-low ABV Manhattan with the ever so slight dryness of Noilly Prat nonchalantly going along with it and building up a pleasant, aromatic, easygoing sipper. I can see myself mixing this more often when I feel like Manhattans but don’t feel like getting tipsy in the afternoon. Really good!
