Purchased a pair of these at an estate auction for very little, and I find the wiring odd. Was this ever common? And is there a more functional way to rewire these?

There is a single switch, which controls all the bulbs at once. (so it’s not as if it can function as a dimmer type setting, unless you manually unscrew some of the bulbs each time).
