my friends are taking honors anatomy n physiology, hardest class theyve taken ever, ex college professor as the teacher, and the final is 90 minutes 5 questions.. im so scared for them

so BASICALLY my band director has us doing blues improv lately. he'll put on a backing track and tell us to just go with the scale. but i always manage to sound horrible. maybe it's because it's a scale written for trombone but surely... it could still sound okay on cello. i've played the lower scales pizz occasionally and it sounded alright, but it doesnt sound right with higher notes, so i gave up on that.. any advice for playing blues?
