2 goals and concerns in disposing of old laptops and or hard drives

1. having as little impact on the environment as possible (which probably means not buying in the first place!)
2. data security- even after a drive reformat my understanding is that data can still be recovered!

Laptop cannot be resold and or even gifted as the cost of repairs makes it worthless.
Would consider paying a (very small) fee to a professional and verifiably trusted 3rd party service that handles this type of thing.

I am considering moving to Linux after finding out my Threadripper 1950x is not compatible with Windows11.
I primarily work in Unreal with occasional Houdini and or Blender work.
I’ve used Ubuntu Mate in the past.

What would be a recommendation for a Linux distro that would be compatible with most VFX apps and workflows?
I’ve heard great things about CachyOS (speed, Nvidia driver updates) but am wondering about compatibility issues.

So the Plume Homepass system is cloud based. Which to me makes 2FA even more important.
Anyone know if this is possible?

The separate "wifi-pod" router + mobile Home Pass application is taking some getting accustomed to. A few questions

1. For security I assume ALL home devices must be connected AFTER the wifi-pod router, and not directly to the supplied cable modem, correct?
2. Is there some way of easilly switching off wifi while still keeping internet (ethernet) working?
3. Can anyone point me to documentation of the advanced features in HomePass? In particular there doesn't seem to be any way to enable 'hidden' wireless.

How do you change the default workflow save location?

Even when you do a 'Save as...' doesn't seem to be an option to choose a directory.

2 questions about the supplied router modem

1- Confused by the requirement for the Eero wifi module. Does this mean all local connections are done via wifi? Is it not possible to hard wire-ethernet to the modem-router?

2- What specific brand and model of router -modem is typically supplied to new users?

Need to save money.

Seems to me with all the competition there should be a package with unlimited downloads at 30mbps for around $50 or less.

Or am I dreaming?

Also do any of the providers offer seniors discounts?
