Sainsburys taste the difference - Monterey jack & pickled jalapeño
At £1.25 for 150g (nectar price, usual price I believe is £1.50), these posh crispsare smack between budget friendly lidl crisps, and more premium high end snacks such as space raiders, but how do they taste?
The pack boasts aromatic onion and garlic, a strange thing to bring up with a pack of crisps that are meant to taste of cheese and pickled jalapeño, but what do I know? Anyway, it's about what's in the bag, not on it!
I'll get to the point with these, they don't taste like Monterey jack and pickled jalapeño, however, they are a very tasty, very well balanced crisp. The crisps themselves are pretty much identical to kettle brand chips, and the flavouring is very pleasantly vinegary, there's a slight creamyness, not really very cheesy, but it does have that lactic tang, the vinegar isn't anything like the acetic assault you get from co op brand crisps, but it's nice nonetheless, not a one dimensional vinegar, there's a bit of apple cider kind of funk to it. Can't really taste that aromatic onion and garlic, but there is a slight whisper of cumin there, and just the right amount of salt and sweetness to let the vinegar shine.
When I saw the name on the bag, I was hoping for a posh version of max jalapeño and cheese, and in that, they have failed, but still, they are very nice crisps on their own right, one of the better limited editions that the supermarkets have on offer this summer, fully deserving of an 8 out of 10, could even have been a little higher if the flavour on the bag wasn't so misleading! Fully recommended!
