Haven't heard response past deadline ?? (EU)

Had interview last thursday for a PhD in Belgium (just a normal PhD call in the EU where you apply with cover letter and CV and have a brief intrview with a panel rather than a formal application cycle). They said I will hear back, at the latest, by the 24th, one full week after my interview....but that is today and I haven't heard anything.

(When scheduling my interview i also never heard anything for like 2 weeks and had to reach back out because apparently the email on their end got lost in spam)

mmmpfh I really loved the project.... but I already assume that I've been rejected. I still want it said to me by email, so would it be too soon to email on Monday asking for an update on their decision?

Has anyone heard back from a PhD position after the given deadline for a response and actually gotten it, or is it usually just for rejections?
