Johnny Pump Iron, a lifting tracker for iPhone and Apple Watch

Johnny Pump Iron, a lifting tracker for iPhone and Apple Watch

Hey Everyone,

I've been building Johnny Pump Iron, a weight training tracker for iOS / watchOS, and I'm opening up the beta beyond my small circle of friends for the first time. I'm looking for a diverse mix of testers — different training styles, experience levels, and backgrounds — so if any of the below sounds like you, read on.

What the app does

Track workouts with programs, routines, and individual exercises. Log sets, reps, and weight as you go.

15 built-in programs ready to start immediately, including:

   • StrongLifts 5×5 and Starting Strength (beginners)

   • Texas Method and Bill Starr 5×5 (intermediate strength)

   • Push / Pull / Legs Hypertrophy and Arnold Split (hypertrophy splits)

   • Powerlifting Peaking 4-Day and Westside-Inspired (competitive powerlifting)

   • Olympic Foundations and Olympic Peaking 4-Day (Olympic lifting)

   • Functional Fitness, Athlete Conditioning, Upper/Lower Strength, and more

Apple Watch companion — start workouts, log sets, and check quick stats right from your wrist

PR detection & celebration — the app detects personal records and makes a little thing of it

Stats & charts — volume, weight, and per-exercise trends over time

Rest timer — configurable, with an optional auto-start after each set

iCloud sync — your data follows you across iPhone and Watch

HealthKit integration — workouts sync to Apple Health

lbs / kg support — switch units and the app converts your entire history

Backup & restore — export and import your data any time

Custom exercises, routines, and programs — not just locked-in templates

Light / dark / system theme

Who I'm particularly looking for

I want feedback from across the spectrum, so I'm specifically hoping to hear from:

• Beginners just getting started with structured training

• Women / female lifters (the app has gender settings that affect a few things, and I want to make sure the experience feels right)

• Powerlifters and strength-focused lifters

• Bodybuilders / hypertrophy-focused lifters

• Olympic lifters

• People who train 3 days a week vs. 5-6 days a week

• Anyone who has been frustrated with other tracking apps and has strong opinions about what's missing

This is a beta — please read before signing up

• The app is in active development. There will be rough edges, missing features, and possibly bugs.

• iCloud sync in particular is something I want real-world feedback on — it works, but cloud sync is one of those things that only stress-tests properly with real users across real devices.

• I'm not asking you to suffer through a broken app — the core tracking loop is solid — but I want people who are willing to poke around and tell me what's confusing, broken, or just not right.

What you get

Everyone who submits meaningful feedback during the beta will receive a full year of the app free of charge when it launches. I want to reward people who take the time to actually tell me what they think, not just install and forget.

How to sign up

Drop me a DM with:

  1. Your Apple ID email address
  2. What kind of training you do
  3. What devices you have (iPhone model, Apple Watch y/n, Mac y/n)
  4. Any specific apps you currently use for tracking (helps me understand your frame of reference)

I'll send TestFlight invites in batches.

How to join (once invited)

  1. Install TestFlight on your iPhone — search "TestFlight" on the App Store (it's free, made by Apple)

  2. Watch for an email from TestFlight/Apple to your Apple ID address — tap the link inside it to accept the invite and install the app

  3. Apple Watch — the watch app installs automatically. If it doesn't appear after a minute, open the Watch app on your iPhone → My Watch → scroll to Available Apps → tap Install next to Johnny Pump Iron

Spots are limited to keep the feedback manageable. I'll reply to confirm once you've been added.

Thanks for reading — happy to answer any questions in the comments.

After many failures…

Finally have a tanto I am proud of. My first attempt at anything near this. Four blades later and this is what I finished up today.

Yes still some blemishes on the blade. Tsukaito wrap has issues. Various other little issues but hey, it adds character. 🥸

Here we are.
