[GOOD TROPE] Teen Girls Prioritising a Stable Future & Choosing To Have An Abortion

  1. Maeve from Sex Education. Maeve is in secondary school and without a strong support network (this is especially true early in the series where she lives alone). An entire episode is dedicated to the (somewhat traumatic) process of having an abortion.

  2. Jal from Skins UK. Jal is trying to get into University for music studies and knows that pregnancy and motherhood would interrupt her life plan. She also becomes aware that her boyfriend carries a genetic disease that dramatically reduces his life expectancy (and would potentially be carried over to her child).

  3. Atom Eve from Invincible. Atom Eve finds out she's pregnant days before her half-alien, superhero boyfriend, Invincible, flies off into space to fight an intergalactic war (and ends up being gone for several months). When Invincible returns, she explains what she went through and he's only focused on how she is currently (her mental and physical wellbeing).

I particularly like this trope because a lot of media seems to assume that once a woman becomes pregnant then choices like abortion (or adoption) are unavailable to her, even though that doesn't reflect the world we live in anymore. It's pretty clear that teen pregnancy can be really punishing for the mothers who find themselves unable to go through some normal teen milestones.

Checking in After a Few Years. What's the Vibes?

I was really committed to TAZ a few years ago. I listened to all of Balance & Amnesty and really enjoyed those. I listened to the first few episodes of Grad, Ethersea, Steeplechase, & Outre Space but never got around to listening to the whole arc. I did listen to all of Verses Dracula because that was pretty fun (I think it became a little bit of a slog towards the end). I gave up on Abnimals 75% into episode 1.

I've kind of run out of good podcasts to listen to and I'm coming back to this and wondering if I should either give one of the arcs I skipped another try or have a go at the new arc (TAZ Royale?).

I'm asking this sub instead of the official subreddit because I remember during the Grad era that the official sub got kind of.... delusional? Like, it couldn't accept how bad things were getting.

I'll be interested in what you folk have to say.
