so, to preface, i have been a Marxist for about 5 years now, and was agnostic since about 2014-15 (raised Catholic in the southern US). however, being part of the local activism movement here in my city personally made me reconsider religion, specifically Islam. its a much longer story, but our local movement is made up of primarily Muslims as well as different strands of leftists/Marxists, and coming into this space about a year and a half ago and being around so many Muslims on a daily basis opened my eyes to Islam because i saw how this group of people were driven to act in ways that i view as righteous because of my values as a Marxist, but realized that they were driven to act in this way due to their religion. made me want to look into it more myself, and after about 7-8 months of personal research, i took my shahada and became a Muslim myself in October of last year.

multiple other communists from various factions (PSL and local-specific orgs) in our area have also converted (we say "reverted") to Islam in the past year, and we have another Marxist comrade who is planning to take her shahada in the next week or two, depending on her schedule.

i find this interesting because so many Marxists are opposed to religion (there are probably some of you in here, please keep it civil if you're upset by anything in this post), and so many religious people are opposed to Marxism, and yet we seem to be having an upsurge in people accepting both of these sets of beliefs in our local scene regardless of what we typically think each group would think about one another.

we also have countless born-and-raised Muslims in our local orgs who accept the label "Marxist," or at the very least, have positive views on AES and Marxist theory, although they say that they are a Muslim first-and-foremost, which i think is fair.

just wanted to see what my fellow tankies thought about this. have you noticed people in your local activism scene choosing to convert to Islam, despite coming from a political label that most people think is staunchly anti-religion? what do you think is the cause of this, if you have seen it yourself? is it witnessing the faith of the people of Palestine and being moved by it, or could it be related to certain liberal leftist-presenting Muslim politicians like Mamdani and their mainstream popularity?
