I realized I've been saying "we should hang out soon" to the same people for years and never actually meaning it — and I think most people do this

There's this person I genuinely like. We see each other maybe twice a year, always have a great time, and every single time we part ways one of us says "we should do this more often!" or "let's plan something soon"
That was... four years ago. We have never once followed up
And the weird part? I don't think either of us is being fake or malicious. We genuinely mean it in the moment. It's like the warmth of seeing someone tricks your brain into thinking the friendship is more active than it is
I started noticing I do this with like five different people. We exist in this permanent "almost friends" limbo — too close to be strangers, not close enough to actually text first
Does anyone else have a whole roster of "almost friends" like this? Is it just adult life, or is there something we could actually do about it?
