State Legislators Raising Their Own Pay (But Not Ours)

SC Senate Bill 933 passes the state Senate with a 24-18 approval and sits in the House Ways and Means Committee for consideration. The bill would raise legislators’ salaries from $10,400 base pay to $47,500 base pay. They also get a per-diem on top of the base pay.

These same legislators only approved a 2% pay increase for state employees). The inflation rate for 2025-2026 is 3.3% according to the federal Joint Economic Committee so the state employee raises do not even keep up with inflation. State employees are effectively taking a pay cut and losing purchasing power.
