How did your MPP vote on Bill 97 to amend and restrict FOI? And how it relates to Ford's $28.9M private jet.
I've complied a summary what our MPPs have been up to lately. I have included a table of MPPs, links to their contact info, riding and how they voted on Bill 97 if anyone would like to contact their representative directly.
On April 2, 2026, MPPs in the Legislative Assembly voted on Bill 97 which includes amending FOI and restricting access to records from the premier’s office, cabinet ministers, parliamentary assistants, and staff. The vote passed with 66 Ayes/37 Nays/21 did not vote.
On April 21, 2026, the House has Discharged the Order of referral to Committee. This means they have bypassed the step where the bill is sent to to a committee where line-by-line review happens, experts, stakeholders, and the public may make submissions, amendments can be made. Meaning they have bypassed the time where we, the public, should have been able to voice objections.
After this, it only needs to go through a third reading where a final vote is taken and the bill is turned into law.
If it is passed into law, this means records around spending decisions (e.g., buying $28.9M private jets while cutting essential public services) will be harder to access, heavily redacted or withheld completely from journalists and the public. If you were mad about $28.9M being spent on a private jet and have concerns about how else the provincial government is spending taxpayer money, you should be outraged about this.
Remember, your MPP is your elected representative. If they will not act in the best interest of the people they serve, we need to hold them accountable. Especially given that 66 MPPs voted in favour of Bill 97 and 21 MPPs did not vote.
You can contact ministers who are not your MPP to add pressure or visibility. Especially Peter Bethlenfalvy who introduced the bill and all cabinet ministers (listed below) who approved the bill before it was introduced. I encourage everyone to make it be known to Doug Ford, cabinet ministers and your MPP that we see what they are doing and how they are voting.
