Raspberry pi 3a occasional print failures?

OK so last weekend I decided to klipper my ender3, as I already had an skr mini e3 v3, along with a raspberry pi running octoprint, reliable, but had a few things to I wanted to do to it.

I have also been in the process of building another printer that has an skr pico in with a rpi zero2w, which has generally been a good experience.

The ender3 was a smooth flash and calibrate in a few hours, but I have had a few unknown issues with random mid print, I've done 15hr prints no problems, but lastnight about 30mins into 3hr print, klipper just seemed to hang.

It was showing being at working temperature but then moonraker lost connection, something that doesn't happen with my solid connections. It just stopped. I tried rebooting the firmware/mainsail and once rebooted it said temperature was right down. One frustrating thing is the fact klipper won't let you move any axis without homing first, is there a way to sort that?

As I wanted to lift the z, but because of a restart it doesn't know where home is, even though that shouldn't matter for a plus z.

The pi is connected via a use cable and I have wondered if usb connectivity could be problematic and if direct uart is the only way to go?
