The creature can still attack you even without the trigger (see the Warden), but a trigger must be part of the reason it does

The Warden is summoned by a Skulk Screecher when the player makes too much noise around them, and attacks the player once it hears them or gets close enough to sense them.

Notorious B.I.G infinitely chases it's opponent once it senses movement, it locks onto and attacks the fastest moving object in it's area.

SCP-4000 work under fae rules, once you give it a name or title it can assign to you more than once it is able to steal that name, removing you from written memory and taking your identity.

Koh is able to steal your face if it sees you make any emotion, while it doesn't seem to kill spirits it will kill a normal person.

The Pale Man is motionless sitting at a table full of food, but is awakened once any food is taken and eaten.
- Fall asleep. Freddy Krueger (Nightmare on Elm Street)
Freddy is a dream demon, he can't attack when you're awake but when sleeping he is able to kill as he pleases.
